Q: What type of maintenance is required for cypress log homes? Does cleaning with a diluted bleach wash on the exterior logs effect the oil on the log?
Tidewater Red Cypress requires minimal maintenance, which gives it one of its many qualities in building log homes. It is highly resistant to termites, rot and decay. . Prior to staining the home, you will need to clean the wood and kill any mold spores, one easy way of doing this is by spraying the exterior with a mixture of beach and water (50/50) and perhaps also needing some detergent if there is dirt or grease present. The amount of staining will vary with the geographic location of the home, the type and color or stain and the exposure to the sun. Sometimes just cleaning the wood with a power spray with make it look good. If you forget to stain the home in a timely manner or just forget to stain the home.. good news, you can always bleach the home, bring it back to the original color and than proceed with the staining.
